How to Get Your Tires Ready for Colder Weather

Once the cooler air of fall arrives, it's time to start planning ahead to make sure your car will be safe to drive during the winter months.  Looking after your car may seem like just one more chore on your already jam-packed list of things to do, but having a safe vehicle is not something to neglect.  It deserves to be at the top of your list, since your safety, and that of your family, is a major priority.

1. Check the Air Pressure in your Tires

It's important to make sure that your tires are inflated to the proper level.  Your owner's manual to will tell you the right level for your vehicle's make and model year.

Keep in mind that as the temperature drops in the fall, the air pressure in your tires will do the same.  You can expect it to fall approximately one or two pounds for every 10 degrees the outside temperature changes as winter approaches.  Use a gauge to check your tire inflation monthly and adjust it as necessary.

2. Examine your Tires for Signs of Wear

Your tires need to be replaced from time to time.  Winter driving brings colder weather and slick roads; you'll want to make sure that your tires are ready to take on this challenge.

Look for obvious signs of wear, such as increased tread wear on the outside edges of the tire.  (This is a sign that your tires have been under-inflated in the past.)  You'll also want to look for bulges or anything else unusual.

3. Don't Forget to Check your Spare Tire

When you're taking the time to get your tires ready for colder weather, don't neglect your spare tire.  Take the time to make sure that your spare is properly inflated and that the treads are in good shape.

If your tires are showing signs of wear this fall, bring your car into Luke's Automotive.  Our experienced mechanics will examine your tires and offer a solution so you can have a safe and comfortable ride throughout the winter.
